Behind the word peptide

What does peptide mean?

The word sounds technical. The first idea is small.

It describes a chain

A peptide links together some of the building blocks found in proteins.

One peptide you may already know by name is insulin.

The name describes what the substance is, rather than what a visit will do for you.

The word peptide gives no answer about approval for use as a medicine.

Some are approved medicines

The agency that reviews drug products is called the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA.

In September 2026, there are FDA-approved products containing semaglutide, sold as Ozempic and Wegovy, or tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro and Zepbound.

Semaglutide is the medicine ingredient in Ozempic products used for type 2 diabetes and Wegovy products used for weight management.

Tirzepatide is the medicine ingredient in Mounjaro, used for type 2 diabetes, and Zepbound, used for weight management.

Their approved uses differ by product.

An injection’s name is therefore only the start of the question.

FDA labels state which uses were approved for a particular product.

Compounded means made to order

With compounding, the medicine can be prepared by a pharmacist or doctor instead of coming as a ready-made product.

In September 2026, FDA does not check each compounded drug’s quality, benefit or safety before patients receive it.

Ask for words you can take away

A clinician is the person who assesses or treats you.

Could the clinician write down the exact medicine name?

Is it an injection or a tablet, and why is that product being considered for my health problem?

A written answer gives you something clear to check.
